Plants Bring Out the Best in People
Before design, I made sure to understand the human relationship with plants. It always fascinated me that more people my age, millennials (people born between 1981 and 1996) are adopting green friends. During my research, I've gained the appreciation that plants aren't just beautiful for display — integrating plant care into your lifestyle also brings a healthier self. Here are my top three favourite health benefits from greenery:
- Natural Cleanser Research has shown that people who surround themselves with plants and live around nature are generally happier. As you might have learned in school, plants release oxygen absorbing carbon dioxide. Plants remove around 87% of the pollutants in the air that come from carpets, glues, paint, and other fibres such as formaldehyde and trichloroethylene that we may consume. Purifying the air in your home is beneficial for your overall health as it eases your brain from fatigue and allows your body to release hormones helping to support your physical and mental well-being.
- Concentration and Memory Scientists from the University of Exeter found that indoor plants enhance concentration and increase productivity. Their results show that the well-being of their subjects improved by 47%, boost cognitive skills by 45%, and increase productivity by 38%. The c02 released from plants, vibrant warm colours, and aromas influence our performance and our overall brain functionality.
- Cultivate Compassion Plants are alive and need to be taken care of like children. For survival they require attention, water, and love. Being a plant parent means committing to the daily responsibilities that are essential to keeping your plants alive. Routine builds habit and teaches compassion for other life. Studies have shown that people who are exposed to plants for longer periods are more empathetic and build stronger bonds with their peers.
